St. Joseph's Graveyard, Hibernia, NJ Open Letter

To all who have expressed interest with regard to the recent vandalism at St. Patrick's Cemetery:

It is unfortunate that there are those who possess the capability to damage, desecrate and destroy that which we have spent our lives preserving.

The fact that no appreciable vandalism has occurred in several years is a testament to The Knights of Columbus and Scout Troop 145 who have been involved in the seasonal cleanups and restorations each year. The visible improvements have sent a message to hikers and other visitors to the area that we are serious about maintaining the property and, overall, people have been respectful.

While this weekend's vandalism is distressing and disappointing, it is important to continue to send the message that this cemetery remains active and to discourage this behavior from repeating.

THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED AUTUMN CLEANUP AT ST. PATRICK'S CEMETERY WILL BE HELD ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9th.

I extend an invitation to everyone on this list who shares an interest in local history or a basic desire to help keep the dignity of the final resting places of those who shaped our county to join us in the cleanup endeavor.

We will be meeting at the Saint Bernard's Parish Hall parking lot on Mt. Hope Road, Rockaway Twp. at 12:15 PM and driving to the cemetery site at 12:30.

PLEASE NOTE: Since the cemetery is located in the woods, there will be a hike of about a half-mile or so.

If you have any rakes, saws, tarps, loppers and/or gas weed wackers & leaf blowers, etc., please bring them along.

Thank you for your time.

John Dunado
